Project of the Month
June 2009
When this Madison WI homeowner decided he wanted to update his kitchen he knew he wanted something that was definitely out of the ordinary, yet a unique representation of his style. To turn his vision into reality he turned to Garrett Dynes, a designer at Bella Domicile.
First the wall between the small kitchen and dining room was removed to create a larger space for the kitchen. Though he entertains often, it is typically informal, and can get to be quite a few close friends. The removal of one wall quickly turned in to removing 3- allowing this new space to become today's popular open floor plan for the first floor.
With so many unique materials available today the homeowner just couldn't pick. Black quartz was used as a contrast to the warm natural beech cabinetry. A trough sink for beverages was incorporated into the back side of the island, but built into a block of Corian that is textured more like a natural stone than a solid surface. The faucet was placed where it can double as a pot filler to the island's cook top, and a distinctive light fixture was selected to highlight this unique sink feature.
To the right of the oversized triple bowl sink is aluminum and frosted glass accent cabinets. Born from these staggered cabinets is this kitchens signature ceiling feature. The custom designed flyover organically moves across the ceiling breaking up this now large ceiling plane. With some of these gatherings going well into the evening, the back lit flyover (along with its shape) really gives this homeowner and his guests the feeling they're in a trendy downtown lounge vs. a kitchen.
